Deep Amazon Expedition: From the Rainforest to Alter do Chão and Belém

This immersive expedition offers an in-depth exploration of northern Brazil, combining pristine rainforest environments, extended river navigation, and meaningful cultural encounters along the Amazon. The journey begins in the heart of the rainforest, where guests stay within the jungle and experience its extraordinary biodiversity through guided walks, wildlife observation, and insight into the ecological and cultural significance of the Amazon basin.

From the rainforest, the expedition continues by boat along the Amazon River, transforming the journey itself into a central part of the experience. As the route approaches Alter do Chão, the focus shifts to life along the riverbanks. Guests spend several days navigating smaller waterways, visiting traditional riverside communities and gaining firsthand insight into their daily rhythms, customs, and relationship with the river.

During this phase of the journey, guests overnight within local communities, sleeping in simple bunk-style accommodations along the riverbanks. These stays offer an authentic and respectful way to engage with local families, share meals, and learn about fishing practices, agriculture, and river-based livelihoods. Time is unhurried, allowing for genuine interaction and a deeper understanding of Amazonian life beyond the main travel corridors.

Alter do Chão itself provides a natural pause in the expedition, known for its white-sand river beaches, calm waters, and relaxed atmosphere. Guests can explore nearby lagoons and islands, enjoy time on the river, and reflect on the journey before continuing downstream.

The expedition concludes in Belém, the historic gateway to the Atlantic. Here, the cultural layers of the Amazon come together through colonial architecture, bustling markets, and one of Brazil’s most distinctive culinary traditions.

Designed for travelers seeking depth, authenticity, and extended immersion, this expedition reveals the Amazon not only as a landscape, but as a living network of communities connected by the river.

Important Notice for All Participants

our Amazon Expedition begins in Manaus, one of the main gateway to the Brazilian Amazon. To ensure smooth logistics and proper preparation, travelers are advised to arrive in Manaus at least one day prior to the expedition start date.

This expedition is flexible in duration and can be adjusted to either 18 or 20 days, depending on your travel preferences and overall itinerary. At the conclusion of the journey, travelers may choose to return by flight or continue onward to Belém, navigating the Amazon River and experiencing life along its waterways. This flexibility allows you to tailor the expedition to your schedule while fully immersing yourself in the Amazon’s landscapes and cultures.

Itinerary

  • Arrive in Manaus, the historic gateway to the Amazon, via Eduardo Gomes International Airport (MAO). Upon arrival, guests are met and transferred to a centrally located hotel.
Depending on arrival time, there may be an introductory city tour, including highlights such as the Amazon Theatre and riverfront areas, offering context on Manaus’ role as a river port and cultural crossroads. (Optional)
The evening is reserved for rest and preparation for the river journey ahead.

    Overnight: Hotel in Manaus

  • After breakfast, depart Manaus by road and river toward the rainforest, observing the changing landscapes and river systems that define the Amazon basin along the way.
Upon arrival at a jungle lodge, begin immersive activities including a guided rainforest walk focused on biodiversity, medicinal plants, and the region’s ecological systems.
After dinner, a guided night excursion introduces nocturnal wildlife and the distinctive sounds of the jungle. From this point onward, all scheduled activities and meals are included for the remainder of the expedition.

After lunch, the Amazon exploration begins in earnest, with activities such as sunrise and sunset excursions on the river, piranha fishing, guided forest treks, and Amazon river dolphin observation. The expedition also includes night spent in the wild, visits to riverside communities, and ongoing exploration of the riverbanks. Full days are dedicated to expedition-style activities, offering a deep and continuous immersion into the Amazon environment.
