Mount Roraima: The Lost World of the Guyana Highlands
Rising from the mist where Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana meet, Mount Roraima is a surreal tabletop mountain that has fascinated explorers, scientists, and nature lovers for centuries. Part of the Pakaraima mountain range, its summit reaches 2,810 meters (9,219 feet) and stretches across 31 square kilometers (12 square miles) — a prehistoric plateau surrounded by sheer 400-meter (1,300-foot) cliffs that rise dramatically above the rainforest canopy. Formed nearly 2 billion years ago, Roraima is among the oldest geological formations on Earth, sculpted by time and isolated by erosion. This isolation has created a unique evolutionary laboratory, where life has adapted in extraordinary ways. Around 70% of the flora and fauna found here are unique to the tepuis, and about one-third of those species exist only on Roraima itself. The summit hosts an astonishing variety of endemic plant life adapted to the nutrient-poor, sandstone soils and constant mist. Among the most remarkable are the carnivorous plants that have evolved to capture insects for sustenance — including species of Heliamphora (sun pitcher plants), Drosera roraimae (Roraima sundew), and Utricularia humboldtii, a delicate bladderwort with violet flowers that thrives in the thin water films of the plateau. Lichen-covered rocks, strange bromeliads, and miniature orchids color the landscape with subtle hues, creating an almost alien ecosystem. Moss gardens and crystal-clear pools reflect the ever-changing clouds, while twisted shrubs and flower clusters emerge directly from the stone — each adapted to survive in an environment both harsh and fragile. Among the fauna, the Roraima bush toad (tiny, black, and yellow) is found nowhere else on Earth. The elusive brown-nosed coati, dazzling hummingbirds, and nocturnal oilbirds are also part of this rare web of life, making Mount Roraima a living museum of evolution and one of the top biodiversity destinations in South America. For those who venture here, trekking across the “Lost World” is more than an adventure — it’s a journey through geological time and a chance to witness nature at its most creative and pure.

BEST OF SALVADOR
Xavier
Traveled September 2026
I travelled with my friend and that was the first time that I booked a tour for 10 days in Malaysia Borneo with a travel agency. I normally travel with my partner and we book and organise everything by ourselves. I was positively impressed how amazing this tour was. Our tour guide Jeffrey did an amazing job.
