Pico da Neblina Expedition

Guardians of the Mist: The Yaripo Communities and the Peak of Pico da Neblina

At the farthest reaches of the Amazon rainforest, where Brazil meets Venezuela, a shroud of clouds hides the summit of Pico da Neblina — the highest point in Brazil, and the sacred heart of the Yanomami world. To the Yanomami, this mountain is not merely a peak; it is Yaripo, the “mountain of the winds,” a living being that connects the human world to the realm of the spirits. For centuries, mist has veiled its flanks, preserving its mystery — and protecting those who call it home. Here, the rainforest climbs skyward in a living tapestry of green. Towering trees host entire aerial ecosystems: bromeliads gather pools of rainwater high in the canopy, sheltering frogs, insects, and microscopic life found nowhere else on Earth. Orchids bloom in the filtered light, while lianas coil toward the sun. On the forest floor, the silence is broken by the hum of insects and the faint rustle of unseen creatures. Among the most remarkable inhabitants are carnivorous plants — species adapted to thrive in the nutrient-poor soils of this ancient landscape, feeding on the very insects that animate the forest air. Guardians of the Mist follows the journey of the Yanomami as they guide us through their ancestral territory, revealing a world where every leaf, every breath of wind, holds spiritual meaning. The Yanomami see Yaripo as a bridge — a meeting point between earth and sky, humans and spirits, the visible and the unseen. As the mist curls around the mountain’s slopes, they remind us that to understand this place, one must listen — to the forest, to the mountain, and to those who have lived in harmony with them since time immemorial. This is a story of connection: between people and nature, science and spirituality, life and the living forest above the clouds.

BEST OF SALVADOR

Xavier

Traveled September 2026

I travelled with my friend and that was the first time that I booked a tour for 10 days in Malaysia Borneo with a travel agency. I normally travel with my partner and we book and organise everything by ourselves. I was positively impressed how amazing this tour was. Our tour guide Jeffrey did an amazing job.
