Amazon Waters and Sand Dunes: A Journey Across Alter do Chão and Lençóis Maranhenses
In the geographic heart of Brazil, the state of Mato Grosso unfolds like a living map of contrasts — vast plateaus giving way to sprawling wetlands, sandstone cliffs overlooking forests that stretch to the horizon. This is a land where water and stone define existence, and where two of South America’s most spectacular natural wonders — Chapada dos Guimarães National Park and the Pantanal — coexist in delicate balance. The Sacred Heights of Chapada dos Guimarães Rising more than 800 meters above sea level, Chapada dos Guimarães is a world carved by wind, time, and water. Its red cliffs and canyons tell a story that began hundreds of millions of years ago, when ancient seas covered the central plateau. Today, those sedimentary layers have become towering formations that glow gold and crimson under the late-afternoon sun. The park’s centerpiece, the Véu de Noiva Waterfall, tumbles 86 meters down a cliff face into a verdant canyon, a curtain of mist that shimmers in the light. Around it, a network of trails leads trekkers through the cerrado, Brazil’s tropical savanna — a biome rich in biodiversity, home to maned wolves, armadillos, and a dazzling variety of birds. For those who walk its trails, Chapada is not just a geological wonder but a spiritual refuge. Ancient rock paintings, hidden in sandstone shelters, whisper of early human presence. From the lookout at Ponta do Campestre, the vastness of central Brazil opens in all directions — an ocean of land meeting an infinite sky. As night falls, Chapada transforms once more: darkness settles, and the stars ignite with a brilliance only possible far from city lights. It’s easy to understand why locals describe this region as “a meeting place between heaven and earth.” The Descent into the Pantanal A few hours south, the terrain softens and flattens until it disappears into water. This is the Pantanal, the largest tropical wetland on the planet and one of the richest ecosystems anywhere on Earth. During the rainy season, rivers overflow their banks, creating a vast inland sea that stretches beyond the horizon. When the waters retreat, a fertile mosaic of lagoons and grasslands remains, teeming with life. The Pantanal is a sanctuary for wildlife — and a paradise for naturalists and photographers. Jaguars prowl the riverbanks, capybaras wallow in mud, and caimans bask in the sun like prehistoric sentinels. Overhead, hyacinth macaws flash cobalt blue, and the resonant call of the jabiru stork echoes through the wetlands. For ecotourists, the Pantanal offers one of the most accessible wildlife experiences in South America. Many visitors stay at sustainable lodges and traditional fazendas, where daily excursions by boat, horseback, or open safari vehicle reveal the intricate rhythm of this ecosystem. Encounters are not guaranteed, but patience often rewards observers with moments of raw intimacy — a jaguar slipping into the water, a giant river otter hunting with its family, or the sudden explosion of wings as a flock of herons takes flight. Nature and Conservation Both Chapada dos Guimarães and the Pantanal embody Brazil’s growing commitment to ecotourism and conservation. Local guides — many of them descendants of indigenous and ranching families — act as stewards of their environment, sharing traditional knowledge alongside modern ecological insight. Tourism here supports not only wildlife protection but also rural livelihoods, creating a model where nature and culture sustain one another. Yet these regions remain fragile. Agricultural expansion, deforestation, and climate shifts threaten the delicate balance that sustains the cerrado and the wetlands. Visitors who come here are reminded that travel, at its best, is not simply about seeing beauty, but about understanding its vulnerability. Journey to the Heart of Brazil To travel from Chapada’s cliffs to the Pantanal’s waters is to witness Brazil in its purest form — elemental, immense, and alive. One region soars; the other floods. One invites the trekker’s endurance; the other demands the naturalist’s patience. Together, they form a portrait of an ecosystem in motion and a country in conversation with its wild soul. As the sun sets over the wetlands and the first stars appear over the plateau, Mato Grosso reveals its true essence — a land of transformation, where earth becomes water, and every journey is a rediscovery of how deeply connected all living things remain.

Itinerary
Arrive at Belém/Val de Cans–Júlio Cezar Ribeiro International Airport (BEL) and transfer to your hotel for check-in and some well-deserved rest after your journey. Depending on your arrival time, explore the city at your own pace—wander through the historic city center, with its colorful colonial architecture and bustling markets, or stroll along the Amazon River promenade to catch your first glimpse of the mighty river, its passing boats, and vibrant riverside life.
Overnight in Belém.
In the morning, transfer from your hotel to the Belém river pier, where you will board a regular Amazon river ferry bound for Santarém, the gateway to the Alter do Chão region. Traveling upriver along the Amazon is an experience in itself. The journey takes approximately two days, inviting you to slow down, disconnect from the outside world, and surrender to the calm, steady flow of the river.
As the ferry advances deeper into the Amazon, the landscape becomes increasingly remote and untouched. Endless stretches of rainforest line the riverbanks, interrupted only by small river communities, wooden houses on stilts, and modest ports where locals come and go. This is the Amazon in its most authentic form—vast, powerful, and far removed from modern infrastructure. Time is marked by the rhythm of the river, glowing sunsets over the water, and peaceful nights under star-filled skies.
This passage is more than a transfer; it is a gradual immersion into one of the most remote and least accessible regions of the Amazon Basin, a transition from urban life to a world shaped by water, forest, and tradition. Overnight on board the ferry.
Upon arrival in Santarém, a private transfer will be waiting to take you onward to Alter do Chão, your final destination. Here, at the meeting point of the Amazon and Tapajós Rivers, white-sand river beaches and crystalline waters welcome you at the edge of the rainforest..
