Beyond the Clouds: 10 Days Exploring Mount Roraima
The journey to Mount Roraima begins in Manaus, deep in the heart of the Amazon. As evening falls, the expedition departs by overnight coach to Boa Vista, crossing vast stretches of rainforest and savanna while participants rest in preparation for the days ahead.
Arrival in Boa Vista allows time to slow the pace before entering one of South America’s most remote regions. The day is dedicated to final equipment checks, last-minute shopping, and a comprehensive expedition briefing, ensuring everyone is fully prepared for the logistical, environmental, and physical demands of the trek. Guides introduce the route, safety procedures, and the cultural and ecological significance of Mount Roraima and the Gran Sabana.
From Boa Vista, the expedition continues by road toward the Venezuela border, entering the wide-open landscapes of the Gran Sabana. The tepui’s massive vertical walls gradually appear on the horizon, rising abruptly from the savanna. The trek begins at the base camp, following ancient indigenous trails that cross rivers, forested valleys, and rolling highlands, steadily leading toward the natural rock ramp that grants access to the summit.
Reaching the top of Mount Roraima feels like stepping into another world. The plateau stretches out beneath shifting clouds, revealing an alien landscape shaped by wind, rain, and time. Stone plains, sculpted rock formations, and constant mist define an environment that has remained isolated for millions of years. The days on the summit unfold at an unhurried pace, allowing deep immersion in this extraordinary ecosystem.
Exploration leads through the Crystal Valley, where thousands of naturally polished quartz crystals blanket the ground, catching the light and creating a surreal, shimmering effect. Elsewhere on the plateau, carnivorous plants, endemic orchids, and ancient mosses thrive in nutrient-poor soils, sustained by constant humidity and rainfall. Every step reveals how life here has adapted in remarkable ways to survive in isolation.
The plateau is also home to unique fauna, including tepui toads, specialized insects, and rare bird species, all evolved independently from their lowland relatives. Natural pools of crystal-clear water form between the rocks, while labyrinths of stone and mushroom-shaped formations create a landscape that feels both prehistoric and untouched. From the highest viewpoints, weather permitting, the eye reaches across three countries—Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana—emphasizing Mount Roraima’s singular geographic position.
As the days pass, the summit reveals its quiet power: a place of silence, shifting light, and constant discovery. This is the landscape that inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Lost World,” and standing here makes it easy to understand why. The final moments on the plateau offer time for reflection, photography, and a last immersion in one of the oldest geological formations on Earth.
The descent retraces the path back through the savanna, returning to Boa Vista, where the journey gradually transitions from wilderness to civilization. From there, the expedition concludes with the return transfer to Manaus, leaving participants with a profound sense of having walked through a truly timeless world.

Overnight: Hotel in Boa Vista
Meals: Breakfast (or as applicable)Early departure from Boa Vista as the expedition travels north by road toward the Brazil–Venezuela border, continuing onward to Santa Elena de Uairén, the last major town before entering the Gran Sabana. The journey crosses wide savanna landscapes, with Mount Roraima gradually appearing on the horizon.
After arrival in Santa Elena, formalities are completed and the expedition continues by vehicle to the indigenous community of Paraitepui, the official starting point of the Mount Roraima trek. A lunch stop in Paraitepui Community provides an opportunity to rest, meet local guides and porters, and prepare final loads for the trail.
In the early afternoon, the trekking phase begins, following open savanna paths toward the Tek River. The walk is relatively gentle, allowing time to adjust to the climate and rhythm of the expedition. The route offers expansive views of the surrounding tepui landscape and the imposing cliffs of Mount Roraima.
Arrival at Tek River Camp in the late afternoon. Camp is set near the river, where participants can relax, enjoy the natural surroundings, and prepare for the more demanding trekking days ahead.
Overnight: Camp at Tek River
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinnerAfter breakfast at Tek River Camp, the trek continues across open savanna along indigenous trails, with Mount Roraima’s towering cliffs growing steadily closer. The route crosses the Kukenán River for a short rest before continuing toward the mountain.
Arrival at Mount Roraima Base Camp in the afternoon, set beneath the tepui’s sheer walls. The remainder of the day is dedicated to rest, hydration, and preparation for the summit ascent.
Overnight: Camp at Mount Roraima Base Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinnerAn early start marks the beginning of the ascent via the natural rock ramp, the only access route to the summit. The climb progresses steadily through forested sections, waterfalls, and rocky terrain, with regular pauses to rest and enjoy expanding views over the Gran Sabana below.
As altitude is gained, vegetation thins and the atmosphere becomes cooler and more humid. Upon reaching the summit plateau, the landscape opens into a vast, otherworldly environment of stone plains and sculpted rock formations. Camp is established on the summit, followed by light exploratory walks and time to acclimatize to the highland conditions.
Overnight: Camp – Summit
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinnerAfter breakfast on the summit of Mount Roraima, the day is dedicated to exploring the Crystal Valley, one of the plateau’s most distinctive areas. The walk crosses stone plains scattered with naturally polished quartz crystals, creating a striking and otherworldly landscape.
Along the route, guides point out endemic tepui flora, including carnivorous plants and mosses uniquely adapted to the harsh, nutrient-poor environment. Time is allowed for photography and observation before returning to summit camp in the afternoon.
Overnight: Camp on the summit of Mount Roraima
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinnerToday is dedicated to exploring the remarkable geological features of Mount Roraima’s summit plateau. The route leads through surreal landscapes of wind- and water-sculpted rock formations, including towers, arches, and labyrinth-like corridors shaped over millions of years.
Natural summit pools filled with crystal-clear water appear between the rocks, offering striking contrasts against the dark sandstone and constant mist. These pools, formed by rainfall and slow erosion, are a defining feature of the tepui and support specialized plant life adapted to this extreme environment.
The pace is relaxed, allowing time for photography, observation, and immersion in the summit’s unique atmosphere before returning to summit camp in the afternoon.
Overnight: Camp on the summit of Mount Roraima
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinnerToday’s exploration focuses on two of the summit’s most iconic landmarks. The trek leads toward the triple border viewpoint, where weather permitting, expansive panoramas open across Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana, highlighting Mount Roraima’s unique position at the meeting point of three nations.
The route continues to the Maverick Window, a dramatic natural rock opening that frames the surrounding landscape and offers one of the most striking photographic perspectives on the plateau. Along the way, guides interpret the geological processes that shaped the tepui and the isolated ecosystem that thrives atop it.
After a full day of exploration, the group returns to summit camp in the afternoon.
